Changing a diaper may seem like a mechanical operation that needs to be done quickly, but for a child, it can often represent a moment of stress and discomfort: if during the diaper change the baby squirms and cries, the changing table becomes a battlefield, and for a parent,s the situation can become impossible. Don’t panic! Here are some useful tips to approach diaper changing gently, making the baby feel comfortable and making everything less difficult.

Why do babies cry when they are changed?

First of all, don’t worry: it’s completely normal for your baby to cry when his diaper is changed. The reasons for this crying can be many and different. For many newborns, changing diapers is a completely new and unfamiliar situation. It may also be that the child doesn’t like the heat and contact with the caregiver on his back, which, together with the limitation of movement, especially after 5 months, can lead the child to experience this moment as a situation of discomfort and stress. Remember also that after the first few months, the baby will start to move a lot more to explore and look around, and it’s normal for him not to want to stay still.

What does it take to change a baby?

To make this operation as easy as possible, before proceeding, make sure you have everything you need at hand, preferably on a changing table, so that it is not necessary to prolong the situation any longer than necessary or move around with the baby, thus risking disturbing him further.

Tips for easy diaper changes

Below we give you some useful tips to make the moment of change delicate by transmitting a sense of security and making the child feel comfortable.

Find the right place: always try to change it in a quiet room or environment.

Warm up the room well: When you undress your baby, the feeling of cold can be very bothersome. Always try to do this in a warm area of the house and if necessary you can use a heat lamp.

Choose the right time: some times are better than others. After eating, for example, or when the baby is calm and relaxed. Avoid interrupting a moment of play, as the child may become irritated.

Find a distraction: distract your baby with a toy or just the tube of cream, or play with a noise that can calm him. Newborns love “white noise,” like the sound of a hair dryer or vacuum cleaner because they remember the sounds as they heard them when they were still in their mother’s womb.

Talk to him or sing him a song : blow on his tummy, tickle him or sing him songs. In short, take advantage of changing his diaper to give him cuddles.

Avoid interrupting your child while he is playing: if he is concentrating on an activity, avoid interrupting him abruptly. It is better to warn him in a decisive tone that you will soon have to change.

Dress him comfortably: Sometimes babies may be bothered by tight collars or sleeves. Try to use clothes with an open front, soft and without seams or buttons that could bother him. To learn more, read our article on  How to dress a newborn.

Change him on the floor: If your little one refuses to stay still on the changing table, spread a changing pad cover on the floor and act quickly as soon as the opportunity presents itself.

Change his/her feet: When children are older, they love to stand and look around. If age and conditions permit, allow him/her to stand.

Recruit their siblings or family: Children are often calmer when another person is around (probably due to the distraction effect).

Finally, remember to stay as relaxed as possible, as children perceive the emotions of the adults who care for them.

How to wash a baby’s nose.

The nose also requires special attention: remember that when the baby breathes through a clear nose, it will be easier for him to eat and sleep. Clean the nostrils (first one and then the other) with a slightly saline solution.

Oral hygiene when to start.

Even if your child is just a baby and doesn’t have any teeth yet, daily grooming would not be complete without oral hygiene. After eating, clean his gums with a specific gum gel that disinfects the baby’s mouth.
